Pop-ups,
small browser windows that are commonly used by advertisers,
can open automatically when you arrive or leave a web
site. Whilst most are annoying, very few are malicious.
Some pop-ups open when you click a link or button and
can be very useful, like viewing a larger image of a thumbnail
or the Yaoogloo! YELP! help screens.
Most users set their pop-up blocker to 'Medium' which
stops automatic popups but allows user requested ones.
The Windows operating system often presents you with a
dialog box and you may need to click OK or YES/NO. Malicious
pop-ups can imitate these boxes and by clicking ANY of
the buttons you can create huge problems for your system.
The safest setting, recommended for inexperienced users,
is 'High'. This stops all pop-ups, which can't be a bad
thing when you're feeling your feet on the Net. Once you're
happy that a web site is trustworthy then add it to your
blockers list of trusted sites and all those useful pop-ups
will work.
