Search engines fall into two categories, indexed based and directory based.

Directory based engines... Yahoo! is probably the best known, classify each website into logically defined categories, great for finding companies or organisations. The Open Directory Project (DMOZ) found in the POPULAR section of this tool, is a huge directory that is edited by an army of human volunteers.

Google is the big boy of these engines and indexing is ideal for finding specific information on a particular topic. You may have to trawl through lots of irrelevant results but its amazing how often you can turn up a great resource for something else.

Some search engines have developed their own search technology, supplying varying results and presenting them in varying formats. Some results are deliberately uncluttered whilst others are clearly driven by commercial arrangements. There is plenty of choice on this tool.

Google delivers what most users want, that's why it's so popular but it's not the best choice for every search. If you never try the others you'll never know what you're missing.
