This method of downloading programs over the internet should be followed if you are downloading from any site not mentioned in the 1st part of this article. There's actually no reason why you shouldn't follow this method for all your downloads.

This article assumes you are using Windows XP and have AVG anti-virus and Spybot Search & Destroy installed.

Once you have clicked the button or link that starts the File Download procedure you will be presented with the pop-up Fig.1 below. If you're unsure about pop-up blockers then click here !

Click the Save button and the dialog box Fig.2 below appears...

Navigate the Save in box to the My Downloads folder, Click the New Folder icon

and name the folder (limewire in above example). Save your download file in this new folder and you will be presented with the pop-up Fig.3 below...

If during the download you have time to tick the 'Close this dialog box...' tick-box then do so. If you don't tick it you will be presented with the pop-up Fig.4 below, when you should click the Close button...

Now open AVG anti-virus and check for updates. Once updated open the Test Centre and press the [F5] key or select Tests, Scan Selected Areas. Select the My Downloads folder for scanning and click the 'Scan Selected Areas' button. After scanning select suspicious files for removal by following the tool's instructions.

Now open Spybot S&D and check for updates. Once updated click the 'Check For Problems' button. After scanning select suspicious files for removal by following the tool's instructions.

If your downloaded file survived the anti-virus and anti-spyware scans then go ahead and run and install it.
